UEC claims record efficiency for red RCLED

UEC has developed and is shipping a resonant-cavity LED with a wall-plug efficiency of 12%.
United Epitaxy Company (UEC), a device manufacturer based in Hsinchu, Taiwan, has announced a new 650 nm high-power resonant-cavity (RC) LED for plastic optical fiber (POF) applications.

The company claims that, with epoxy encapsulation, the devices gave a record high wall-plug efficiency of 12% and also yielded an output power of more than 3.5 mW at 20 mA.

The device has an emission window with a diameter of 84 microns, which allows the output to be easily coupled into the POF. Data links using POF are being employed in automotive applications, as well as to connect multimedia devices.

UEC says that the devices are suitable for transmitting data at a rate of 250 Mbits/s over 100 m. The power variation between 20 and 85 degrees C of the POF-coupled emission was approximately 2 dB at 20 mA forward current.

The company also says that the RCLED has a long lifetime in a high-temperature environment. UEC started to ship this product during the fourth quarter of 2003.
