Alcatel transfers InP HBT technology to Ommic

InP HBT technology developed by Alcatel will now be available through Ommic’s new InP foundry service.

French communications giant Alcatel is transferring its InP-based HBT technology to Paris-based MMIC and epitaxial wafer supplier Ommic.

Ommic says that the deal, which will see it become Europe’s first InP HBT foundry, completes the company’s commercial portfolio of III-V technologies.

Alcatel designers will have access to a qualified source to develop 40Gbit/s transmission systems for core networks.

The InP technology was developed at Alcatel’s Research & Innovation department. The process uses a double heterojunction bipolar structure, which offers a cut-off frequency of more than 200GHz and a breakdown voltage of over 5V.

Alcatel says that it has already developed prototype 40Gbit/s chip sets based on the DHBTs with record-breaking performance. These circuits include full-rate D-type flip-flops, multiplex drivers and voltage-controlled oscillators.

Ommic, which already makes high-frequency power PHEMT and MHEMT devices, joins Vitesse Semiconductor, Northrop Grumman and Global Communication Semiconductors as one of the few companies in the world offering InP HBT foundry services.

Ommic’s CTO and COO Marc Rocchi said: “This new indium phosphide DHBT process fits in exactly with our strategy and technology roadmap.”

Joelle Gauthier, the vice president of Alcatel Research & Innovation, said: “To prepare the deployment of 40Gbit/s systems, Alcatel has to secure the industrial availability of all required technologies, and we feel indium phosphide DHBT is one of them. Ommic’s commitment to develop the process is very good news for us.”
