IPAG buys Opto Speed's assets in Germany

Innovative Processing AG (IPAG) has acquired the assets of Opto Speed Deutschland, and has also secured further funding.
Innovative Processing AG (IPAG), a manufacturer of InP-based optoelectronic devices based in Duisburg, Germany, has acquired the assets of Opto Speed Deutschland GmbH (OSD).

The deal provides IPAG with a product portfolio containing Fabry-Perot (FP) and distributed feedback (DFB) lasers operating at 1310 and 1550 nm, as well as superluminescent diodes (SLEDs). The new products complement IPAG’s existing pin diode business.

IPAG has also secured further funding from its lead investor, High Tech Private Equity GmbH. “As a result [of this acquisition], IPAG is now a leading company for high-speed optoelectronic components in Germany,” said Christian Schuette, managing director of High Tech Private Equity GmbH.

Opto Speed Deutschland GmbH, which was the former optoelectronic components group of Deutsche Telecom, filed for insolvency in July 2003 due to the insolvency of its parent company Opto Speed Switzerland SA. The IPAG acquisition completes the break-up of Opto Speed following the formation of two new companies, Exalos and Albis Optoelectronics, in Switzerland.

The main production site of IPAG will now be located in Darmstadt, and Stefan Hansmann, the former head of operations of OSD, will join IPAG s management board.

IPAG will now focus on FP lasers, DFB lasers for data rates of up to 10 Gbit/s and SLED chips. Also, IPAG will extend its epiwafer material services for optoelectronic devices. The pin diode business will be extended to devices with superior performance at aggravated operating conditions for special applications in avionics, defense and sensing.

“The two companies’ businesses are a perfect match due to their complementary technology and products,” states Stefan Hansmann. “The enhanced customer base and consolidated revenues strengthen IPAG’s competitive position.”

“The acquisition of the assets of Opto Speed Deutschland GmbH speed up our capabilities in bringing an extended high-speed product portfolio based on InP and GaAs to a challenging marketplace,” said Ralf Bertenburg, member of the management board and founder of IPAG, who will be responsible for business development and marketing in future. “We are happy to have the opportunity to join forces with the highly motivated team of OSD.”
