RFMD ramps next-generation PA production
Wireless RFIC manufacturer RF Micro Devices (RFMD) says that it has begun production shipments of its quad-band, EDGE-capable power amplifier module to a "top-tier" handset manufacturer.
The Greensboro, NC, company said that production shipments of what it claims to be the world’s smallest such module are expected to reach the multimillion dollar level in the first half of 2004.
“By quickly ramping production [of PA modules] we enable our customers to bring next-generation handsets to market more quickly,” said RFMD’s VP of wireless products Eric Creviston.
The quad-band module, which is suitable for GSM, GPRS and EDGE applications, is based on GaAs HBTs and features laminate substrate packaging.
All four bands are integrated into a single GaAs HBT die in the module, which RFMD says is 75% smaller than its previous-generation component. The module includes integrated power detection, eliminating the need for an external ceramic coupler, detector diodes and other passive components.
The “top tier” manufacturer that RFMD has begun shipping to will be using the PA module in many of its handsets.
RFMD estimates that it has a market share of over 50% in GSM/GPRS/EDGE PAs.
