Osram grants white LED license to Samsung

Osram and Samsung Electro-Mechanics have signed a patent licensing agreement under which the Korean company will manufacture white LEDs.
Osram GmbH, the lighting company based in Munich, Germany, has granted Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. Ltd. a royalty-bearing license to manufacture and sell white LEDs using Osram’s patented conversion technology.

Osram holds a number of patents in this area, which were developed by its subsidiary Osram Opto Semiconductors. White LEDs are manufactured by combining blue-emitting InGaN chips and a suitable fluorescent converter.

A typical application for white LEDs is backlighting for color displays and keypads in mobile phones.

In the last two years, Osram Opto Semiconductors has signed a patent cross-licensing agreement with Nichia, and has also licensed its white LED technology to the Japanese company Rohm and the Taiwanese manufacturers Everlight and Lite-On (see Osram grants LED license to Lite-On Technology (February 2004)).

This deal marks the first time that Osram has entered into a licensing agreement with a Korean company. Samsung Electro-Mechanics, based in Suwon, is a leading manufacturer of ultra-high brightness blue LED chips (see Samsung orders another Aixtron reactor (December 2003)).
