Gennum buys SiGe’s optical IC product line
SiGe Semiconductor has sold its Lightcharger product portfolio to fellow Canadian firm Gennum Corporation in a cash deal. The value of the deal was not disclosed.
The Lightcharger portfolio includes SiGe-based trans-impedance amplifiers (TIA) and limiting amplifiers operating at 1.25 Gb/s, 2.5 Gb/s, 4 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s.
As part of the deal Gennum is also acquiring the SiGe development team, largely based in the UK, and also product-related test equipment.
“The acquisition of 10 Gb/s TIA products complements our CDR [clock/data recovery] products for the 10 Gb/s XFP [eXtensible Filtering Pipelines] optical transceiver market,” stated Gary Beauchamp, vice president and general manager of data communications products at Gennum.
“This acquisition also provides Gennum immediate entry into all other 10 Gb/s optical transceiver markets, the new 4 Gb/s fiber channel (storage) optical transceiver market, and the established 1.25 Gb/s and 2.5 Gb/s transceiver markets.”
We will work closely with Gennum to ensure a seamless transition for our optical customers, who will benefit from Gennum’s broader range of products for data communications,” added Jim Derbyshire, president and CEO of SiGe Semiconductor.
Gennum already has design teams based in Burlington and Ottawa, both in Canada.
