Lumileds LEDs backlight large-area displays
NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display, a producer of flat-panel monitors, has unveiled LCD prototype displays using Lumileds Luxeon LEDs at the 13th annual Windows hardware engineering conference.
NEC-Mitsubishi used the LEDs for backlighting a 21.3-inch LCD monitor with a resolution of 1600 by 1200 pixels, and a 23-inch LCD monitor with 1920 by 1200 pixels.
The LCD monitors use a high accuracy color calibration system which minimizes color shifts using NEC’s panel technology, with innovative light guide systems and color filters, claims NEC-Mitsubishi.
To target the red-green-blue color space the company chose Luxeon LEDs which it believes provide an enhanced color spectrum.
“The introduction of NEC-Mitsubishi’s latest product is a significant milestone for the desktop display industry and will dramatically improve the computing experience for many customers,” said Tom Phillips, general manager, Windows hardware experience group at Microsoft corporation.
