JDS Uniphase acquires E2O for $60 million

JDS Uniphase expects to strengthen its position in the optical data communications market after buying E2O Communications.

JDS Uniphase, one of the leading manufacturers of fiber-optic components, has purchased E2O Communications for approximately $60 million in cash. The move will strengthen JDSU’s position in the data communications market.

E2O was founded in 1998 and is headquartered in Calabasas, CA, with a manufacturing plant in Singapore. The company manufactures multi-gigabit-rate fiber-optic subsystems for the computer storage, internet and telecommunications markets. Its optical transceivers support various Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel and other standards.

“The acquisition of E2O provides JDS Uniphase with additional expertise in low cost manufacturing, greater economy of scale, and other infrastructure cost synergies that we believe will lower costs now and for the future,” said Don Bossi, president of JDS Uniphase’s transmission products group.

He continued: “We believe these synergies and the strong cultural fit between the two companies make this a lower-risk path to expand our role in one of our fastest growing markets.”

E2O was a supplier to major datacom customers, and the acquisition has enabled seven new companies to join JDS Uniphase’s existing customer base.

H.C. Lee, president and chief executive officer of E2O, will join JDS Uniphase as vice president of the combined datacom business unit.

E2O s revenue in recent quarters has been in the region of $5 million. The company also brings strong research and development capabilities and leading technology to JDS Uniphase, such as its long wavelength VCSELs targeting 10 Gbit/s operation.
