In brief: Modulight, Osram OS, Freiberger, Ligitek

Modulight has received a new contract to supply lasers for meteorological applications, Osram's LED factory has won an award for energy-efficient manufacturing, Freiberger has a new sales VP and Taiwan's Ligitek has increased its LED production capacity.
Modulight supplies lasers for meteorological applications

Modulight, a supplier of semiconductor laser products based in Tampere, Finland, has entered into an exclusive multi-year agreement with another Finnish company, Vaisala, to supply specialized laser diodes for Vaisala s new products for meteorological applications.

Under the contract, Modulight will utilize its existing technology and supply laser diodes that will enable Vaisala to develop new products and reinforce its competitiveness.

“This agreement gives us new opportunities in environmental measurements and helps to provide unparalleled quality products to our customers,” said Hannu Tuominen, division director of Vaisala Solutions.

Vaisala develops and manufactures industrial and environmental measuring products, and has customers that include national meteorological services, aviation, road and rail authorities, and public utilities.

Osram LED factory wins Bavarian Energy Award

Osram Opto Semiconductors has won the 2004 Bavarian Energy Award for a system that recycles waste heat in its LED manufacturing facility in Regensburg, Germany. Robert Wittgen, CFO of Osram Opto Semiconductors, received the award from Otto Wiesheu, the Bavarian state minister.

The system recycles waste heat generated at various cooling steps within the manufacturing process, and also by the production of compressed air. The energy is passed via two heat exchangers into a system that preheats high-purity water from 10°C to 20°C.

Potential energy savings are estimated to be in the region of 3 million kWh per year; generating this amount of electricity would produce around 500 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Freiberger appoints new sales VP

Freiberger Compound Materials USA, a subsidiary of the German substrate manufacturer, has appointed Jim Fang as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Fang, who will be located in Los Angeles, is a former employee of IntelliEpi, and will be responsible for sales activity in the US, with major emphasis on customers in the Western portion of the country. He will also contribute to Freiberger’s sales activity in Asia.

Russ Kremer will continue in his position as Vice President, Marketing and Applications, and will act as General Manager for Freiberger in the US. The US headquarters for Freiberger will remain in Dayton, OH.

Ligitek expands SMD LED capacity

Ligitek Electronics, a Taiwanese SMD LED maker and packaging company, plans to increase its revenues from NT$775 million ($23 million) in 2003 to NT$925 million ($27.7 million) this year, according to the DigiTimes website.

Ligitek installed an MOCVD machine in March, and will increase its monthly production capacity of SMD LEDs from 3 million units in the first quarter to 30 million units by the end of the year.
