News in Brief: Cree, Emcore and Xemics

Cree raies its financial outlook for June quarter, Emcore links up with a distributor in China, and Xemics licenses Skyworks' Bluetooth technology.
Cree ups revenue targets for June quarter
US-based LED manufacturer Cree has raised its revenue target for its fourth fiscal quarter, which ends on 27 June 2004. The prediction has been increased from $83 to $85 million, announced earlier in the quarter, to a range of $85 million to $87 million.

After the first two months of the current quarter, LED demand has exceeded the previous forecast. In addition, the company has experienced improved price stability.

Cree expects these two factors to result in an overall gross margin similar to the third fiscal quarter of 2004, and associated earnings above the previous target range.

Emcore announces BUPT-GUOAN as distributors
Emcore has announced an agreement with BUPT (Beijing University of Posts and Telecom)-GUOAN Broadband Network Technology Company Ltd., to distribute Emcore s fiberoptic cable television and satellite communications products in China.

The agreement combines the strengths of Emcore s Ortel division, with expertise in hybrid fiber/coax(HFC) and fiber-to-the-premise network architectures, products and technologies, and BUPT-GUOAN, with its domestic sales and support staff and intimate knowledge of China s broadband market place.

"China is the world s fastest-growing HFC market, and our goal is to double our market share over the next 18 months. Already, we have seen a marked increase in our demand for 1550nm and 1310nm products, and we expect to continue to build momentum in Asia," said Lee Johnson, vice-president of marketing for Emcore s Ortel division.

Xemics to license Skyworks Bluetooth technology
Xemics, based in Neuchatel, Switzerland, and a provider of low-power Bluetooth baseband ICs has announced that it has agreed to license Skyworks Solutions ultra-low-power Bluetooth radio transceiver to complement Xemics Bluetooth offering.

"We agreed to license Skyworks radio IP to better serve our client s needs to apply the world s lowest power Bluetooth solution at even more competitive prices," said Alain Dantec, president and CEO of Xemics.

Xemics and Skyworks collaborated on several Bluetooth designs, combining Skyworks SKY723x3 RF transceiver, manufactured through a SiGe BiCMOS process, with Xemics XE1400 series CMOS baseband controllers.
