In brief: Epistar, Avanex, Trikon, RFMD

Epistar expects a fall in shipments, Avanex points to acquisitions for a $124 million loss, Trikon shows signs of better days to come, and RF Micro Devices sells its billionth PA.
Epistar dims its predicted sales
Taiwan-based LED manufacturer Epistar expects third-quarter shipments to remain flat or even fall according to the web-site DigiTimes.com.

The company previously predicted shipment of 130 million GaN-based LED chips in the third quarter, although this figure will be revised - quarter two shipments were 80 million units.

Epistar also shipped 430 million AlInGaP LED chips, used in handset keypads, in the second quarter of 2004, and will further increase capacity to 450-500 million units in quarter three.

Avanex cites acquisitions for $124 million loss
US-based optical component provider Avanex Corporation has reported revenue of $31.9 million for its fourth fiscal quarter, up $1.8 million sequentially, and an increase of $24.6 million over the equivalent quarter of 2003.

Acquisitions of optical components businesses previously belonging to Alcatel, Corning and Vitesse accounted for the significant revenue increase - full-year revenue for fiscal 2004 was $106.9 million, up $85.5 million on the previous year.

Avanex said that the net losses of $21.6 million for the recent quarter, and $124.1 million for fiscal 2004 (compared with $102.9 million in 2003), were primarily due to the acquisition costs.

Avanex s liquid assets have increased over fiscal 2004, from $95 million on 30 June 2003, to $173 million one year on. Cash and cash equivalents over the same period have also strengthened from $10.6 million to $21.6 million.

Trikon starts to turn the corner?
UK-based wafer fabrication equipment manufacturer Trikon Technologies revenue for the quarter ending 30 June 2004 was $10.2 million, up $3.4 million sequentially, and higher than the $6.0 million reported for the equivalent quarter in 2003.

Operating loss has fallen to $4.5 million, down from $6.5 million in the previous quarter. Orders have also improved, with Trikon reporting its highest quarterly bookings since the fourth quarter of fiscal 2000, of $13.6 million.

Trikon, impressed at the company s improvements under John Macneil, have appointed him as president and CEO on a permanent basis.

RFMD rings in a billion PAs
RF Micro devices (RFMD), the US-based manufacturer of RFICs, claims it has set an industry record as the first wireless semiconductor company to ship one billion power amplifiers for mobile phones.

"We are extremely proud of this significant milestone, as it underscores our historical and leadership position as the world s number-one supplier of cellular PAs," said Eric Creviston, VP of wireless products at RFMD.
