Osram focuses on the automobile industry

Osram's latest LEDs and laser diodes cover a wide variety of applications, including automobile lighting, reading lights and industrial signage.

Osram Opto Semiconductors, the Germany-based LED manufacturer, has launched a host of new products including high-power laser diodes and warm-white LEDs.

Targeting the automotive industry, its new laser diodes emit in the infra-red (800-1000 nm) with output powers of up to 10W in pulsed mode.

Even higher output powers have been achieved by epitaxial growth of a collection of laser diodes arranged in a vertical stack, coined a "nanostack". These devices have output powers of up to 75W in pulsed mode, with emission appearing to come from a single source due to the close proximity of the emitters.

Osram believes these lasers could be used in adaptive cruise control sensors and infra-red night vision systems.

Osram has also expanded its Golden Dragon LEDs range with a warm-white version of the technology.

The color, similar to that of incandescent and halogen lamps, is produced by adding a red-converting phosphor to the LED package. With a color temperature of 3200K, the package is suitable for reading lights, display cabinets, and car interiors.

Another addition to the LED portfolio, filling the gap between the Golden Dragon range and the Power TopLED, is the Advanced Power TopLED. This device, available as either a red, yellow or white emitter, is suitable for tail-light clusters, industrial signage, vehicle interiors, and backlighting dashboards and instrument panels.

One reason for its superior brightness over the Power TopLED is its improved heat dissipation - it has six "legs" instead of four - allowing it to operate at higher currents.

Osram has also released an integrated die-cast reflector, a package for infra-red components. This package is suitable for applications requiring tightly focused infra-red light but with insufficient space for a lens. Applications include distance, range and steering angle sensors.
