Skyworks ramps for 3G handsets and China
Skyworks Solutions is ramping production of its power amplifier (PA) modules for wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) applications following a volume order from a top-tier cell phone manufacturer.
The modules are said to allow 3G handset owners to send and receive data at up to 2 Mbps. They use the company s load-insensitive PA (LIPA) technology, which is said to maximize power efficiency in both high and low RF power ranges.
Incorporating LIPA means that handset OEMs can use a single PA to cover multiple frequency bands, so that the handsets are suitable for use around the world.
The devices used in the modules are manufactured using Skyworks 50 GHz GaAs HBT process and feature an InGaAs emitter.
Meanwhile, at the lower end of RF applications, the Woburn, MA, company has received an order from Beijing-based handset maker Xinwei Telecom Technology. Xinwei will integrate RF subsystems from Skyworks in phones targeted at China s huge rural population.
Xinwei recently agreed a similar deal with Anadigics, another US manufacturer of PA modules.
The handsets will support the low-cost synchronous code division multiple access (SCDMA) standard, and sales are expected to begin by the end of this year.
SCDMA, which is also known as the "Big Smart" wireless phone service, was developed by Xinwei, and operates in the 400 MHz and 1800 MHz spectra.
China is evaluating three possible 3G standards for next-generation wireless services, including one based on SCDMA that has been developed by Xinwei s parent company.
