In brief: Crystal IS, Agilent, Fairchild, Comlase
AlN substrate manufacturer Crystal IS will increase its floor space this June with a move from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute incubator building in Watervliet to a 10,500-square-foot facility in nearby Green Island, NY.
"Tech Valley's unique blend of a talented workforce and collaborative opportunities with institutions such as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany NanoTech convinced us that this is where we want to stay to grow our business," remarked Crystal IS CEO Leo Schowalter.
Agilent honors spintronics researchersAgilent Technologies' has awarded its Europhysics prize to three scientists for their investigation of magnetic semiconductors and spin coherence in the solid state. The phenomena, which can be observed in the InAs-based materials, have paved the way for the future development of spin electronics, or "spintronics".
The prizewinners, who will share 51,000 Swiss Francs ($42,400), are David Awschalom from the University of California Santa Barbara, Tomassz Dietl from the Polish Academy of Sciences, and Hideo Ohno from Tohoku University, Japan.
Fairchild names Mark Thompson as CEOUS-based chip manufacturer Fairchild Semiconductor will replace founding president and CEO Kirk Pond with Mark Thompson on 4 May.
Thompson has previously held the roles of CEO at Big Bear Networks, and head of Tyco's Power Components Division.
Comlase appoints Nils Ögren as COOSweden-based Comlase, which provides engineering services for optoelectronic device production, has appointed Nils Ögren as chief operating officer.
Ögren, who most recently held a position as manager of process integration and quality at Infineon Technologies, has over 25 years of experience in semiconductor process technology.
