In brief: Nichia, JDS Uniphase and Aixtron

Nichia and Korea's Luxpia settle a lawsuit, JDS Uniphase acquires a small company specializing in remote photonic power delivery systems, and Aixtron sets up a European division.

Luxpia settles with Nichia
Japan-based Nichia and the Korean LED manufacturer Luxpia have settled their patent infringement lawsuit.

According to Nichia, Luxpia opted to settle the case. The Japanese company filed the lawsuit in June 2004, alleging that the Korean company's technology infringed Nichia's Korean patent number 992 103.

Nichia added that it withdrew its infringement claims after Luxpia publicly apologized by taking out advertisements in two Korean industry journals "“ The Electronic Times and Maeil Business Newspaper.

JDSU acquires Photonic Power
Continuing its recent acquisition drive, leading photonic chip manufacturer JDS Uniphase has bought a small US firm that has developed a photonic power delivery system.

The technology developed by Photonic Power Systems, which is based in Cupertino, CA, uses light from a laser to illuminate a photovoltaic power converter, which in turn generates electrical power. The system uses both GaAs and InP chips.

Because it is delivered photonically over optical fiber, this "photonic power" is immune to RF and electromagnetic interference, as well as lightning strikes.

JDSU believes that the acquisition will give it access to a diverse range of new industrial customers. For example, the Japanese company NEC TOKIN says that it has used the technology to switch its television broadcast facilities from analog to digital transmission.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. JDSU completed the acquisition of the firm on May 26, and all eight of its employees will now be based at JDSU's San Jose location.

Aixtron sets up European arm
Deposition equipment supplier Aixtron has established a European wing that will take responsibility of the sales, service and spare parts business for Thomas Swan, Epigress and Genus.

As well as the main European regions, Aixtron Europe will also cover Israel and Russia.

Heading up the new division will be Frank Schulte, who has been at the Aachen-based company for 15 years and also set up Aixtron's Japanese subsidiary.
