GigaBeam chooses InP for broadband wireless

Vitesse's InP technology is to be used by US-based GigaBeam to develop 10 Gbit/s wireless communication systems.

US-based high-speed wireless communications provider GigaBeam Corporation has acquired certain exclusive rights to Vitesse's InP technology for use in its high-performance RF modules.

"The Vitesse technology and know how being obtained under this new agreement will be incorporated into our next generation 10 Gigabit-per-second products," remarked GigaBeam CEO Lou Slaughter.

GigaBeam is currently developing 10 Gbit/s wireless products operating at 10Gig E and OC192 protocols, which will replace its WiFiber 2 and WiFiber G Series products that operate at 1 GBit/s.

The company's WiFiber products use the 71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz radio bands, which is a portion of the frequency spectrum that has been authorized by the Federal Communications Commission for wireless point-to-point commercial use.

According to the company, the speed and reliability associated with its wireless technology is comparable to that delivered with terrestrial fiber, but it is far cheaper and quicker to deploy.

GigaBeam has also teamed-up with US-based Epsilon Lambda Electronics to design and support a millimeter wave communication system for the US Navy, which will initially provide communication within a ship.

"This initiative further underscores the importance of millimeter wave technology in advancing military and government communications," said Slaughter.
