Optoelectronics market set for growth
The optoelectronics market will see strong growth in the areas of consumer entertainment and computers, according to Michael Lebby, executive director of the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA).
He says that this market is now offering opportunities for start-ups to succeed by leveraging existing technology that was developed by the communications market, and then applying it to emerging applications.
"They can also take advantage of the current over-capacity of manufacturers to outsource fabrication," he added.
The OIDA has identified small displays in mobile handheld devices, high-brightness LEDs, image sensors in digital cameras and camera phones, and diode lasers for optical storage, as sectors showing increasing interest in the use of optoelectronics.
If start-ups are to win funding from venture capitalists and penetrate these markets, Lebby believes that these firms must have a strong engineering platform ready for production, evidence of a large attractive and profitable market, and a seasoned management team.
"Start-ups should also take advantage of the resources offered by trade associations like the OIDA," said Lebby. "Our reports can help them identify both the opportunities and the obstacles that they face."
• Delegates at this year s CS-MAX conference can hear more about the OIDA's Industry Roadmap in a presentation by Mike Lebby.
That talk forms part of the two technical sessions on optoelectronics that also feature presentations from Eblana Photonics, Infinera, BinOptics, Modulight, Ortel and Emcore.
See the CS-MAX program for further details.
