In brief: Skyworks, Microsemi and OCP

Skyworks ramps production of its two-chip RF solution, Microsemi acquires a company working on wide-bandgap transistors, and Optical Communication Products posts a profit.

Helios Mini ramped for Samsung
RFIC maker Skyworks Solutions is ramping production of its new Helios Mini RF subsystem due to demand from Samsung for use in its mobile phones.

The two-chip subsystem is said to improve talk time by up to 10% in EDGE handsets by increasing power amplifier efficiency and reducing the number of external components required to transmit signals.

Skyworks will be hoping to catch its rival RF Micro Devices through Helios Mini deployments, after RFMD gained an initial lead in the EDGE market (see related story).

Microsemi buys Advanced Power Technology
RF semiconductor manufacturer Microsemi of Irvine, CA, is expanding its reach with the acquisition of Advanced Power Technology (APT), a supplier of power chips for a variety of applications based in Bend, OR.

Although mostly focused on silicon technologies, APT has developed some GaN and SiC transistor capability, which it expects to feature in next-generation products.

OCP sees revenue creep up
Optical Communication Products (OCP), which makes fiber-optic subsystems and modules out of its Woodland Hills, CA, base, posted a revenue of $14.8 million in its final quarter of fiscal 2005, which ended on September 30.

The sales figure represented a sequential increase of 8.7% and was 12.5% higher than the equivalent period last year, highlighting what CEO Muoi Van Tran described as a "higher level of activity" from customers.

However, OCP's full-year results showed a revenue of $56 million, down from $57.1 million in fiscal 2004. Despite the slight drop, OCP did post a small profit of nearly $1 million for fiscal 2005, compared with a loss of $1.3 million in the previous year.
