JDSU back to normal after incident hospitalizes 12
JDSU s pump laser manufacturing facility in San Jose, CA, was evacuated and quarantined last Friday (March 3) after what the company described as an "incident".
The evacuation was sparked on Friday morning when a male employee in one of the fab cleanrooms was found on the floor in a semi-conscious state.
Another 11 JDSU employees at the facility were taken to hospital as a precaution after showing some worrying symptoms, prompting the local fire department and a specialist hazardous materials team to investigate the cause of the incident.
JDSU's own emergency response team was also called into action, with the fab remaining quarantined for most of the day and other employees sheltered in the adjacent building at Rose Orchard Way. Around 100 people work at the facility.
All but one of the affected workers was released from hospital on Friday, while one was kept in hospital overnight and released on Saturday.
The temporary quarantine was lifted late on Friday as control of the site was handed back to JDSU, but the cause of the incident remains unknown, according to a JDSU official. "Nothing has been found," said the company spokesman.
In a statement, JDSU CEO Kevin Kennedy said that there was no evidence of contamination by hazardous materials.
"We are expecting to resume operations at the facility on Monday, March 6," Kennedy added. "[This will be done in a] controlled and deliberate manner, with the safety and health of our employees being of paramount concern."
