Korean firm adds Aixtron tool to meet demand

EpiValley is the latest GaN LED maker to invest in more MOCVD kit.

EpiValley, the Korean manufacturer of high-brightness LEDs based on GaN, has ordered a new MOCVD system from Aixtron.

The German equipment vendor, which has seen its order books swell recently thanks to renewed demand for its reactors (see related story), will supply the Kwangju City company with a Thomas Swan CRIUS system that has a 30 x 2-inch capacity.

EpiValley makes epiwafers for both green and blue power LED applications, and gained some of its technological expertise through its November 2005 acquisition of KT Mark, a company that was launched by the Ministry of Science and Technology back in 1993.

"Having already expanded capacity for LEDs and related products, the market demand now requires us to add further capacity," said EpiValley in a statement.

Key HB-LED maker Philips Lumileds ordered a similar CRIUS tool less than a month ago. The equipment is said to be smaller, easier to operate and maintain, and more reliable than previous generations of MOCVD technology.
