Evans Analytical snaps up SIMS specialist

Materials characterization firm Evans Analytical Labs broadens its III-V services with the acquisition of Applied Microanalysis Labs.

Independent materials characterization service provider Evans Analytical has increased the scope of its III-V offering through the acquisition of Applied Microanalysis Labs (AML).

AML, which was founded in 1998 by Yumin Gao and is based in Santa Clara, CA, specializes in secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS).

Gao still runs AML, and is regarded by Evans's VP of operations Mike Edgell as a world leader in III-V material characterization, and in particular GaN-based LED structures.

SIMS provides a way to characterize semiconductor materials through depth profiling analysis. AML says that it also offers services for profiling AlGaAs-based laser diode structures, SiC wafers, VCSELs and GaAs-based transistors - among a wide range of applications in both silicon and compound semiconductors.

Gao says that the extra resources available through Evans will allow AML to expand and better serve the global III-V industry. "This union will be good for customers," he said.
