Cree's latest chips are twice as bright
Cree has released the latest version of its "EZBright" range of high-power LED chips.
The new InGaN-based products, which are available in commercial quantities, are said to deliver twice the brightness of the Durham, NC, company's existing offering.
"For the first time, these chips should enable solid-state lamp makers to challenge the efficacy of not only incandescent, but also fluorescent lamps," said Cree CEO Chuck Swoboda.
"The EZBright1000 LED power chip is one of several advancements we are working on to help drive LEDs into more mainstream lighting applications."
The applications that Cree is targeting include auto headlamps, streetlights and projector displays, as well as home and office lighting.
Measured as a bare die, the blue power chips deliver as much as 370 mW at 350 mA drive current, and up to 800 mW at 1 A.
The latest chips are the third in Cree's EZBright range, and are based on technology that was in part developed through the US Department of Energy's solid-state lighting program.
