Cree Customer Touts Lamp To Rival 65-Watt Bulbs

LED Lighting Fixtures, whose CEO Neal Hunter was previously at Cree, says that a "revolutionary" new LED-based down light will change the lighting industry.

LED Lighting Fixtures (LLF) has launched what it describes as the first affordable lighting fixture powered by semiconductor emitters that is able to rival the output, appearance and lighting quality of a 65 Watt bulb.

The recessed down light, which is the Morrisville, NC, company s first product, uses Cree XR-E power chips to deliver around 650 lm from a fixture running at an electrical input power of only 10-12 Watts.

Neal Hunter - LLF s chief executive and formerly chairman of Cree - said of the development: "Our introduction of a viable LED product for general illumination will have historic implications for the lighting industry."

"We believe that LED lighting for the mainstream has finally been enabled," continued Hunter.

According to LLF, the lamp can be used in a standard six-inch recessed housing, and is also dimmable. It is available in both "cool white" - typical of most LED-based lamps - and also "warm white", which is more akin to the appearance of a traditional incandescent bulb.

LLF is showing off the new lamps at the NAHB 2007 International Builders Show in Florida this week, where it will show a direct comparison between the LED-based lamps, incandescent bulbs, and compact fluorescent lamps.

Although it is yet to disclose any pricing details or customer wins, LLF expects to begin shipping the new products in the second quarter.
