Semiconductor sales could rise with PC market recovery

A new report has said the Asia Pacific and the US are leading the way in increasing PC shipments, which could impact upon semiconductor sales.

In the fourth quarter of 2009 more than 90 million units of PCs were shipped worldwide, according to a new report by Gartner.

The semiconductor industry could feel this demand as consumer electronics continue to exert an influence on the manufacture of components.

Shipments in the fourth quarter marked a 22.1 per cent increase from the fourth quarter of 2008 and is the most robust quarter-over-quarter growth rate seen by the PC market over the past seven years.

Although Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) have been slower to recover, the US and the Asia Pacific region - which both entered the recession first - are experiencing strong PC market growth, which could impact on the region's semiconductor sales.

"The EMEA region returned to positive shipment growth for the first time in three quarters and Latin America and Japan also recorded shipment increases," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.

IMS Research has also reported that internet video device shipments are expected to significantly rise between 2009 and 2010.ADNFCR-2855-ID-19561179-ADNFCR
