PSMA to host industry session for GaN and SiC at APEC 2014

Industry experts representing GaN and SiC component manufacturers, power supply manufacturers, magnetic component suppliers and academia will discuss current trends, materials and design issues
The Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) Magnetics Committee is sponsoring the Industry Session “How Are Magnetics Catching Up To SiC & GaN?” at APEC 2014.

The session will take place on Thursday, March 20th, 2014, from 2:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the Fort Worth Convention Centre in Fort Worth, Texas.

The APEC Industry Session (IS2.5) will feature industry and academia experts from Transphorm, Payton America, Inc., Rompower, GeneSiC Semiconductor, Yageo Corporation, Dartmouth College and North Carolina State University. The speakers will provide a broad overview of magnetics trends, materials, and design issues in GaN and SiC power conversion applications.

Magnetics design is often overlooked area for power electronics engineers, and yet it is vitally important to get it right. The PSMA Magnetics Committee has recognised the need at APEC for more practical, application-oriented information about this specialty and have responded by organising an Industry Session on this topic.

The session will provide a better understanding of how improved bandgap switches are shaping needs and trends of magnetic components. It will also foster more awareness of new issues and technologies, thereby helping component developers to offer more effective technologies and system designers to better optimise their power electronics.

Stephen Carlsen, co-chair of the PSMA Magnetics Technical Committee, states, “It is widely believed that magnetics are becoming a limiting factor in accomplishing the potential improvements in power electronics offered by wide bandgap materials. We have organised a strong Industry Session to address the issues and provide an opportunity for attendees to interact with other professionals who are active in the design and application of new materials and designs.”

He continues, “I am encouraging people to register for APEC 2014, make plans to attend this Industry Session and consider participating in the other PSMA sponsored meetings during the week.”

The Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) is a non-profit professional organisation with the objective of enhancing the stature and reputation of its members and their products, and improvement of their technological power sources knowledge. Its aim is to educate the electronics industry, academia, government, and industry communities as to the applications and importance of all types of power sources and conversion devices.
