Crystal IS Introduces surface mount UV LED

New LED is more efficient solution for biofilm control

Crystal IS has released a new high-performance short wave ultraviolet (UVC) LED in a surface mount package for biofilm and biofouling control. Part of its Optan range, the LED is based on native AlN substrates, which the company says overcome limitations of other UVC LEDs in the market.

According to Crystal IS, the new LED, which is available in wavelengths from 260nm to 275nm, enables far more effective and efficient biofilm and biofouling control, it also supports Total Organic Carbon (TOC) monitoring in water, and it can be used as a low voltage source of UVC light for calibration of cameras, photodetectors, etc.

"Our customers came to us with a difficult situation in controlling biofouling, where coatings, traditional UV lamps or mechanical wipers weren't that effective," said Larry Felton, CEO of Crystal IS. "We are thrilled that our latest Optan product will solve that problem, especially when it comes to ocean and industrial process instrumentation.

The LEDs feature a wide radiation pattern with a viewing angle of 100°; maximum drive current of 300 mA in continuous mode; light output of over 2mW; and a typical L50 of 3000 hours at 100mA.
