New Vishay Ceramic-Based, High-Power UV LEDs built on InGaN technology

Devices Provide Energy-Saving Replacement for Mercury Lamps in Medical, Industrial, and Printing Applications

Vishay Intertechnology has introduced the first two devices in a new series of ceramic-based, high-power UV LEDs with silicone lenses. Designed, the company says, as energy-saving replacements for mercury lamps. The Vishay Semiconductors VLMU3500-385-060 and VLMU3500-385-120 claim to deliver exceptionally long lifetimes in compact 3.5 mm by 3.5 mm surface-mount packages for medical, industrial, and printing applications.

The environmentally friendly UV LEDs are free of heavy metals and provide increased reliability with their shock resistance and immunity to degradation from frequent on/off switching. The VLMU3500-385-060 and VLMU3500-385-120 allow for the use of simple low-voltage circuitry and require no warm-up period.

Built on InGaN technology, the devices released feature typical radiant power of 780 mW at 500 mA and 1037 mW at 700 mA in a wavelength range between 380 nm and 390 nm. The devices provide radiant intensity of 730 mW/sr and 390 mW/sr at 700 mA, respectively.

Samples of the new UV LEDs are available immediately. Production quantities are available with lead times of six to eight weeks.
