IQE wins 'Made in Wales' award

Company recognised for work in developing compound semiconductor cluster

IQE has won the 'Advanced Manufacturer' title at the Insider Media 'Made in Wales' Awards 2015.

The award, sponsored by Hunter Selection, was presented during a gala ceremony at Cardiff City Hall in recognition of IQE's close work with the Welsh Government and Cardiff University to achieve a number of key milestones in developing an advanced, high-tech manufacturing capability with the vision of establishing the world's first compound semiconductor cluster in Wales.

Drew Nelson, IQE's CEO, said: "This Award is timely recognition of the excellence of our work. The company is uniquely positioned to lead the establishment of a technology cluster to help drive the high-tech manufacturing capabilities for the development and commercialisation of next generation semiconductors.

"In August 2015, IQE announced the formation of the Compound Semiconductor Centre (CSC), a joint venture between IQE and Cardiff University. A formal launch of the CSC is scheduled for next month at events in Westminster and Cardiff. By developing regional specialisation, we plan to build the world's first semiconductor cluster, creating high-quality businesses and jobs."

The Compound Semiconductor Centre or CSC provides an important milestone towards the creation of a regional specialisation in compound semiconductor technologies. It will build on the work of Cardiff University's Institute of Compound Semiconductors announced in May 2015 to provide a dedicated facility for research into new and novel deployment of compound semiconductors.

The company is currently leading of consortium of up to 40 businesses and institutions across Europe in a Horizon 2020 application to fund the establishment of up to twenty pilot production lines for compound semiconductor based technologies.
