Sheffield spin-out launches first laser
Stratium, a quantum cascade laser manufacturing company and spinout from the University of Sheffield in the UK, has launched its first quantum cascade laser (QCL) for gas sensing and and environmental monitoring.
The firm has particular expertise in short-wavelength QCLs.
The first product, the Bruar 100mW (peak) pulsed QCL chip on sub-mount, operates at room temperature and has three wavelengths: 2.8, 3.3 and 10.0µm, suitable for detecting ethanol, methane and ammonia respectively. It will be exhibited at the forthcoming SPIE Photonics West event in San Francisco.
Stratium has recently moved to Cardiff, Wales to take advantage of local compound semiconductor expertise and investment. This includes £50 million investment from the UK Government to create the UK's first CS R&D Catapult Centre, which will bring together entrepreneurs, engineers and scientists with state-of-the-art facilities to create new products and services.
