Aegis and United Semiconductors partner on in-Space manufacturing
Aegis Aerospace, a US space and defence company, has announced a partnership with United Semiconductors to pioneer semiconductor manufacturing in space.
This collaboration follows Aegis Aerospace's recent grant agreement with the Texas Space Commission to develop an in-space manufacturing platform for advanced materials in low Earth orbit (LEO).
Los Alamos-based United Semiconductors has been supplying the US defence sector and US national labs with compound semiconductor substrates since 2005. In recent years, the company has expanded its crystal growth capabilities to establish In-Space manufacturing of bulk crystals using the benefits of microgravity and space environment.
"We are thrilled to join forces with United Semiconductors," said Stephanie Murphy (pictured above left), CEO of Aegis Aerospace. "Together, we will accelerate the in-space manufacturing of essential semiconductor materials, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in space technology."
The Aegis Advanced Materials Manufacturing Platform (AMMP) aims to demonstrate the unique properties and manufacturing capabilities afforded by the microgravity environment of LEO.
