Eggtronic introduces GaN-powered USB-C reference
Eggtronic, a specialist in energy-efficient power conversion technologies, has announced a 140W USB-C Power Delivery AC/DC reference platform for next-generation premium laptops and high-performance devices. The design is developed based on Renesas’ high-voltage GaN transistors.
The new platform combines Eggtronic's EPIC combo controller with Renesas' GaN device, the TP70H150G4LSG (700V, 150 mΩ RDS(on)), delivering an unprecedented combination of extreme efficiency, outstanding cost-effectiveness, and simplified system architecture.
Unlike conventional high-power USB-C adapters that rely on costly LLC, Asymmetrical Half-Bridge (AHB), or Active Clamp Flyback (ACF) topologies, the new reference design is claimed to offer efficiencies approaching 96 percent while maintaining the bill of materials cost of a traditional QR flyback converter.
The platform also delivers high efficiency across the entire operating range, including 94.5 percent efficiency at 90 VAC input and light-load performance that compliance with the latest DOE Level VII energy efficiency requirements.
Eggtronic's EPIC combo controller integrates Totem Pole Power Factor Correction (PFC), isolated primary-side regulation, synchronous rectification, proprietary low-latency isolated communication, and USB Power Delivery protocol management
According to the company the platform's Totem Pole PFC overcomes two of the most common limitations of conventional implementations—EMI performance and light-load efficiency—while maintaining industry-leading conversion efficiency.
The PFC stage feeds Eggtronic's proprietary QuarEgg regenerative flyback architecture, which utilizes a single primary-side switch to achieve higher efficiency and lower system cost than LLC, AHB, and ACF converters while maintaining the simplicity and economics of a QR flyback design.
"The demand for compact, cost effective, highly efficient USB-C power adapters continues to grow rapidly," said Igor Spinella, founder and CEO of Eggtronic. "By combining Renesas' outstanding GaN technology with our EPIC combo-controller, we have created a platform that significantly raises the bar for both efficiency and cost-effectiveness. We believe this reference design provides OEMs with a compelling path toward the next generation of premium power adapters."
Rohan Samsi, Vp, GaN Business Division at Renesas, added: "The reference platform is a direct result of our collaboration with Eggtronic, which brings together complementary expertise in power conversion and digital control. It gives customers a strong foundation for developing compact, high-performance power systems such as USB-C charging at a competitive cost.”
The 140W USB-C Power Delivery reference board is available now and is intended to accelerate the development of high-performance notebook adapters and other USB-C powered devices.
