AquiSense achieves UV-C LED milestone
UV-C LED technology used on International Space Station water dispenser
AquiSense Technologies, a maker of UV LED water disinfection systems, has announced that the company’s UV-C LED technology has been successfully integrated into NASA’s Potable Water Dispenser aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and has been operational since August 2023.
The Potable Water Dispenser (PWD), designed by Leidos and equipped with AquiSense Technologies' PearlAqua Micro point-of-use UV-C LED water disinfection system, was launched into space aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
Designed to provide safe and clean drinking water for astronauts on the ISS, this system represents a successful collaboration between AquiSense Technologies and Leidos, an aerospace and defence company.
AquiSense's UV-C LED technology is designed to rapidly deactivate harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. The compact footprint and energy-efficient operation of AquiSense's UV-C LED system make it ideally suited for outer space applications where resources are limited, and space is at a premium, according to the company. Importantly, the construction ensured consistent and reliable operation to withstand the rigours of space travel and operation in microgravity environments.
