Rohm acquires site to expand SiC production
Company says acquisition enables fast production expansion by using existing infrastructure
In a brief press release, Rohm has announced it will acquire the assets of Japanese CIGS solar company Solar Frontier's former Kunitomi Plant. The site is approximately 400,000 m2, with a total floor area of 230,000 m2.
The acquisition is scheduled to take place in October 2023 and the aim is to expand production for SiC power devices.
“This acquisition enables a fast production expansion by using existing infrastructure. This way, Rohm will continue to quickly and reliably supply its customers,” states Wolfram Harnack, president at Rohm Semiconductor Europe. Rohm is aiming to start operation at the end of 2024.
Rohm says the role of semiconductors, in particular, the automotive and industrial equipment markets are undergoing technological innovation such as electrification in order to reduce environmental impact and achieve carbon neutrality. With this, the demand is increasing – especially for power and analogue semiconductors.
