MacBook Pro with OLED screen marks ''significant milestone'
TrendForce says Apple’s newly unveiled MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR display marks a significant milestone in the evolution of MacBook display technology and user experience, becoming the first model in the lineup to feature a tandem OLED touchscreen.
TrendForce estimates that shipments of the new model will reach 1.2–1.5m units in 2027. Apple’s entry into the OLED notebook market is also providing fresh impetus for panel makers to accelerate the development of advanced display technologies.
However, TrendForce notes that the new MacBook Pro’s premium starting price of US$2,899 for the 14-inch model, coupled with its initial availability alongside existing Mini-LED models, could temper near-term replacement demand.
Nevertheless, the launch further reinforces Apple’s reputation for technological innovation and premium positioning. Together with the MacBook Neo’s departure from Apple’s traditional entry-level pricing strategy, the move reflects the company’s broader efforts to expand its product portfolio across a wider spectrum of price points.
Until now, the OLED notebook market has been driven primarily by Windows-based brands such as Lenovo, HP, and ASUS, which have gradually expanded their OLED offerings across different price segments. Apple’s arrival is expected to give the market additional momentum, encouraging brands to prioritise OLED models in their product roadmaps while strengthening consumer acceptance of the technology. This, in turn, could pave the way for broader OLED adoption in notebook displays.
Despite an anticipated contraction in the overall notebook market for two consecutive years, TrendForce forecasts that OLED notebook shipments will grow nearly 40 percent YoY in 2026, followed by another increase of more than 40 percent in 2027.
Samsung Display secures exclusive supply position as rivals set their sights on the OLED MacBook Air
Samsung Display (SDC) is currently the exclusive panel supplier for the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display. The company has designated Phase 1 of its G8.6 A6 production line at its Asan campus in South Korea as a dedicated facility for Apple.
The new MacBook Pro carries considerable strategic significance as the first product to enter mass production on SDC’s G8.6 fine metal mask (FMM) OLED line. Its selection as the display for Apple’s first and most premium OLED notebook underscores SDC’s technological capabilities and strengthens its position at the forefront of the OLED market.
TrendForce explains that the new MacBook Pro’s tandem OLED architecture and pixel density of 254 pixels per inch (PPI) impose exceptionally demanding requirements on panel production. Meeting these specifications presents substantial challenges for suppliers, particularly in terms of material costs and manufacturing yields.
Although other panel makers are conducting qualification programs, the high cost of meeting Apple’s stringent specifications, combined with SDC’s established position as the primary supplier, presents considerable barriers to entry., says TrendForce. As a result, competing OLED panel makers, including LG Display, BOE, and TCL CSOT, are largely directing their efforts toward securing a place in the supply chain for the OLED MacBook Air, which is expected to debut in 2029.
