Quantum dot displays to dominate TV market
QLED screens could reach 34 percent share of the LCD TV panel market by 2021
A presentation by Ross Young, founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) speaking at the recent QLED and HDR10 Summit in Los Angeles suggests that quantum dot (QD) displays will increasingly dominate the TV market.
In his presentation entitled 'QD vs OLED TV Capacity And Cost Outlook', Young concluded that OLED TV panel capacity will be small and will remain small relative to LCD capacity through 2021.
DSCC research predicts that the total TV market will grow from 261 million units in 2016 to 282 million in 2021. Within this, QLED TV shipments will rise at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 90 percent, reaching over a 100 million units and a 34 percent market share.
Young's analysis finds that OLED TV panel shipments are only expected to rise at 49 percent CAGR up to 2021, suggesting that OLED TV capacity is only expected to account for 4 percent of TV capacity by 2021.
