Applied Epi Announces That Its GEN2000 System Has Been Qualified For Production By RF Micro Devices

Source: Applied Epi

St. Paul, MN. Applied Epi announced today that RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD) has qualified its Applied Epi GEN2000™ MBE (molecular beam epitaxy) system for production. The GEN2000, which is being used by RF Micro Devices to grow HBTs (heterojunction bipolar transistors), can be configured for either four-inch or six-inch wafers.

"This is now the second GEN2000 to be qualified and growing high-quality wafers," said David Reamer, President of Applied Epi. "The GEN2000 being used by RFMD and the previously qualified IQE GEN2000 are currently the highest-capacity MBE systems in the world."

Applied Epi s GEN2000 (7x6") and GEN200™ (4x4") are the first systems in the compound semiconductor industry to integrate MBE and UHV technologies with cluster tool wafer-handling architecture from the silicon manufacturing industry. The GEN2000 system s 7x6" platform, "silicon-style" design, and high-capacity sources promise higher throughput, longer campaigns, and excellent quality wafers in a footprint 40-60% smaller than any other multi-6" production system.

RF Micro Devices, Inc., an ISO 9001-certified manufacturer, designs, develops, manufactures and markets proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) primarily for wireless communications products and applications such as cellular and PCS phones, base stations, wireless LANs, and cable television modems. The Company offers a broad array of products - including amplifiers, mixers, modu-lators/demodulators, and single-chip receivers, transmitters and transceivers - representing a substantial majority of the RFICs required in wireless subscriber equipment. The Company s strategy is to focus on wireless markets by offering a broad range of standard and custom-designed RFICs in order to position itself as a "one-stop" solution for its customers RFIC needs. In the September 4, 2000 issue of Fortune Magazine, RF Micro Devices was ranked second among Fortune s "100 Fastest Growing Companies." RF Micro Devices, Inc., is traded on the Nasdaq National Market under the symbol RFMD.

Applied Epi, Inc., a privately held company, is a global supplier of epitaxy equipment, solutions, and services that enable the manufacture of compound semiconductors. The company is an innovator in Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) technology, having developed such products as SUMOÒ effusion cells and Valved Crackers. It currently offers a complete line of MBE production systems, research systems and components, including its industry-exclusive silicon-style GEN2000 and GEN200 systems. The company manufactures its epitaxial products in its 120,000-sq. ft. facilities at its headquarters in St. Paul, MN.
