Movaz Networks Adds Tunability to Its RAY Products With Bandwidth9's MetroFlex Tunable Lasers

Co-Development Agreement Established Between Movaz and Bandwidth9 to Deliver Tunable Optical Network Solutions

Fremont, CA. Bandwidth9, a leader in flexible, reliable, and cost-effective optical transmission subsystems, today announced that it is working closely with Movaz Networks (Atlanta, GA) to develop and manufacture a key component of Movaz s metro optical networking solutions. The companies have been working for several months on pioneering state-of-the-art tunable architectures for remotely tuning wavelengths in optical networks.

Tunability is an essential requirement for optical systems, and we re working with Bandwidth9 to deliver it in our RAY optical product portfolio, said Bijan Khosravi, founder, chairman and CEO of Movaz Networks. Incorporation of tunable laser technology not only allows us to provide dynamic assignment of wavelength frequencies remotely through our RAYtracer Graphical User Interface, it also enables us to reduce the sparing needs of our customers. This is just another way we are dramatically improving the economics of optical networking for service providers.

The companies have entered into a development and production agreement that begins by imbedding tunable transceivers, based on Bandwidth9 s MetroFlex™ product line, into the Movaz RAY™ product portfolio. Movaz Networks has introduced a suite of carrier-grade optical networking products for metro edge, access, and core applications. By combining optical transport and switching capabilities as well as a GMPLS optical control plane, Movaz is delivering a product platform specifically designed for managed wavelength services.

Movaz and Bandwidth9 s combined solution provides clear benefits for metro deployments, said Grier Hansen, analyst with Current Analysis. The strategy of developing and delivering products that are both cost effective and have a small form factor will enable the delivery of next-generation metro network applications that metro carriers are looking to offer moving forward.

MetroFlex transmitters are based on Bandwidth9 s groundbreaking vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) and micro electro mechanical structure (MEMS) technologies, which deliver faster, more precise wavelength tuning and stability than other solutions. The Bandwidth9 laser tunes and locks to a specific wavelength in less than 200 microseconds -- 50 times faster than competing solutions -- and it boasts a truly continuous tuning range that brings more deployment and provisioning flexibility to metro carriers.

Movaz s relationship with Bandwidth9 comes after its careful consideration of our technology and manufacturing strategy, said Hatch Graham, chairman and CEO of Bandwidth9. By providing precisely tunable, highly reliable, VCSEL-based lasers, and by having the manufacturing capability to turn them out reliably and at a significantly reduced cost, we allow Movaz to bring affordable, full-service tunable networks to metro carriers.
