Lumileds Lighting Purchases Multiple GaNzilla Tools

Somerset, NJ. Emcore Corporation (Nasdaq: EMKR) today announced that LumiLeds Lighting has signed an agreement for the supply of MOCVD (metallorganic chemical vapor deposition) tools to be used in the production of high brightness gallium nitride (GaN) light emitting diodes (LEDs). A joint venture between Agilent Technologies and Philips Lighting, LumiLeds Lighting has purchased multiple EMCORE GaNzilla™ tools in the initial phase of the agreement, as it continues to ramp up its LED production across all wavelengths, including green, blue, cyan and white.

EMCORE s GaNzilla™ tool provides LED manufacturers with an innovative technology platform that enables a new generation of LEDs. The GaNzilla™ offers the highest throughput and lowest cost per wafer in the industry in order to facilitate the high volume production of GaN materials that achieve brighter performance with lower power consumption. By designing a growth chamber that optimizes flow conditions and uses reactants to maximum efficiency, EMCORE s production tools are redefining manufacturing costs to drive the growth of the LED market.

According to Mr. Greg Crema, VP of Manufacturing at LumiLeds Lighting, the agreement with EMCORE will ensure that LumiLeds is in a strong position to capitalize on expected growth in the LED marketplace.

Applications for LEDs are being developed quickly and there are several strong indications that the market is poised for tremendous growth over the next couple of years, says Mr. Crema. EMCORE s MOCVD tools will be critical to our ability to ensure high quality, high volume production as we produce devices which meet these application requirements and provide the lighting market with the many advantages of LEDs.

Mr. Crema added, EMCORE s GaNzilla tools will not only provide us with high volume manufacturing efficiency, but also offer a low cost of ownership. As we work towards revolutionizing the world of lighting, these tools will enable us to produce brighter, longer lasting products to satisfy our customers needs.

Tom Miehe, vice president of Sales and Marketing at EMCORE, commented, We are delighted to announce this agreement with LumiLeds, which is a testament to the success of our GaN production technology and reinforces our position as the leading manufacturer of GaN production tools. This program has already yielded the sale of several machines and we look forward to an even greater commitment over the coming years.

Independent research conducted by from Strategies Unlimited of Mountain View, Calif., reports that the high brightness LED market has experienced a growth rate exceeding 58 percent annually for the past five years. It also stated that the high brightness LED sector reached $1.2 billion in 2000 - accounting for 42 percent of the total LED market - and is expected to exceed $3.4 billion in 2005.
