JDS Uniphase Expands DML Source Laser Offering For Metro, Access And CATV

OTTAWA, CANADA and SAN JOSE, CA. JDS Uniphase Corporation and today announced a family of temperature tunable, directly modulated lasers (DML) and added to its fixed wavelength product line, making it the broadest DML offering in the industry for 2.5 Gb/s systems. The low cost of DMLs make them key products for two of the developing areas in fiberoptic communications: the Metro and Access market segments.

With its CQF413 Series for 2.5 Gb/s systems, JDS Uniphase is among the first to introduce temperature tunable DMLs. These products are two-channel tunable for the 100 GHz ITU and are available in both 100 km and extended reach 180 km versions and for both low (2.5 mW) and high (10 mW) peak output power levels.

JDS Uniphase also introduced the CQF915/508, a low power (2.5 mW), extended reach (180 km), fixed wavelength DML for 2.5 Gb/s systems. With this product, the CQF 915 Series now includes models for both low and high power, and for both standard and extended reach applications.

DMLs meet performance requirements for span lengths typical of the metro and access markets. Other laser sources, such as continuous wave (CW) lasers with external modulators or electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs) are well-suited for much longer spans but are more expensive for metro and access applications.

JDS Uniphase DMLs have sufficient performance (low chirp) for extended reach (180 km) and are stable enough that wavelength lockers are not required, offering additional savings potential at the systems level. They include a thermo-electric cooler and can operate in uncontrolled environments up to 85?C. The CQF 413 and CQF 915 Series are available for both the C- and L-bands.

With tunable lasers, systems manufacturers can stock fewer parts, resulting in savings in logistics and inventory. And since the CQF 413 Series temperature tunable lasers were developed for the 100 GHz ITU grid, logistics and inventory costs associated with upgrading current 2.5Gb/s WDM systems from 200 GHz spacing to 100 GHz systems may be reduced.

Applications

The CQF 413 Series and the CQF 915 Series can be used in WDM metro architectures and in cable television (CATV) networks, where high optical output power and very low dispersion are required. They are especially suitable for systems operating in environments with uncontrolled ambient temperature.

Availability

The DMLs in the CQF 413 and CQF 915 are available for order from JDS Uniphase Representatives and Distributors worldwide. Standard lead-time is approximately 3-4 weeks after receipt of order. Please contact your JDS Uniphase representative for pricing information.
