Market for multifiber transmit links to reach $1.25 billion in 2006

A new report from ElectroniCast is predicting rapid growth in the deployment of multifiber transmit links.
According to a new report from ElectroniCast, the global consumption of multifiber transmit link components will grow rapidly from $48.7 million in 2001 to $1.25 billion in 2006. The report called “Multifiber Transmit Link and Components Forecast” predicts that growth will be most rapid in the 2001-2003 period. Multifiber transmit links are mostly used in short-distance interconnects such as from building-to-building and intra-cabinet links. Such short distance links are an important application for VCSELs that, as yet, do not have the power output required to transmit over long distance links.

“The VCSEL diode has emerged as the lowest cost optical solution in this application,” said ElectroniCast’s founder and chairman Jeff Montgomery. “The performance of VCSELs is advancing rapidly to higher data rates, higher output power and both single mode and multimode, 850 and 1310 nm devices,” added Montgomery. “It is not surprising that several multifiber transmit link competitors have a strong base in VCSEL research and fabrication.”

The growth in the use of multifiber transmit links is being driven by the increasing level of data traffic that is in turn forcing the use of optical interconnects in servers, routers and other traffic management equipment. The report forecasts the values and quantities of the various components, including VCSELs, photodetectors and ASICs, that will be required for multifiber data link modules and assemblies in the period from 2001-2006.
