Report details trends and opportunities in 10 Gbit/s market
A new report from CIR indicates that the market for 10 Gbit/s electronic and optical components and modules will grow to $856 million by 2008. WDM-related products will represent almost two-thirds of the market.
The average annual growth rate for the 10 Gbit/s sector will be around 16 percent for the 2004-2008 period, compared with 8 percent in the 2002-2004 period.
Cost, performance and functionality advantages are being achieved through improved packaging, better power consumption and thermal control, and enhanced manufacturing processes.
Networking technologies have not usually taken off until they demonstrate about ten times the performance of the next lowest speed technology for about one-third the cost. CIR says that 10 Gbit/s technologies have not yet achieved this, and that component manufacturers making this kind of leap forward will attract considerable profits to themselves.
