Intrinsic expands with Bandgap acquisition

Wide-bandgap wafer supplier Intrinsic Semiconductor acquires SiC specialist Bandgap Technologies and plans to expand the combined business.

Intrinsic Semiconductor, a Virginia-based company focusing on GaN and SiC materials, is to acquire SiC wafer supplier Bandgap Technologies. Bandgap, of Columbia, SC, is a defense contractor.

The acquisition will provide Intrinsic with a greater variety of SiC wafers, specifically bringing in expertise in 4H/6H products. It also adds production capacity for SiC bulk crystal growth and the opportunity to extend crystal diameters.

Following the part-cash, part-stock deal, Bandgap president Yuri Khelbnikov will become Intrinsic s director of bulk crystal growth while Cengiz Balkas remains CEO and president of the combined operation.

The joint operations are expected to be "fully integrated" by the end of August. Balkas revealed to Compoundsemiconductor.net: "Integration will happen very quickly. Much of the crystal growth will be relocated to our Virginia facility, but some back-end operations will continue in Columbia."

"We will also look at ways to expand the business in Columbia," Balkas added.

Intrinsic recently introduced a range of GaN-based HEMT epiwafers (see related story) for both military and commercial applications.
