TriQuint's year-on-year revenue falls by 20%

TriQuint's quarterly revenue is $17 million down on last year's figure, but the company believes its top line will recover through sales of new modules for wireless phones and broadband applications.

RF chip manufacturer TriQuint Semiconductor has posted revenue of $67.9 million for the second fiscal quarter ended June 30. The revenue excludes any contribution from the company's InP optoelectronics business, which it sold to CyOptics on April 29 (see related story).

TriQuint has recalculated its financial results for the current and prior quarters by reclassifying the results from its optoelectronics business as "discontinued operations".

Following this adjustment, second fiscal quarter revenue was up $1.0 million sequentially, but down $16.5 million year-on-year.

Although profit for the second quarter was $6.2 million, that figure includes a one-time contribution of $7.7 million from the sale of its optoelectronics business.

According to TriQuint, quarterly gross margin has increased from 27.5% in the first quarter of this year to 30.7% for this quarter through improvements in capacity utilization in the high-volume factories.

"In our largest market, GSM/GPRS/EDGE handset products, we generated record quarterly revenue of over $9 million on the strength of our new module products," remarked Ralph Quinsey, TriQuint's CEO.

Quinsey said that the company's CDMA orders have "rebounded" significantly from the low levels of the fourth quarter of 2004 and the first quarter of 2005.

TriQuint's broadband products orders have also increased slightly in the second quarter, but base station and defense revenues were flat and down slightly, respectively.

The company expects third quarter revenue to rise to $73.3 million to $76.7 million, through increased sales of products for wireless phones and broadband applications.
