A German partnership between CGS, a subsidiary of PVA TePla, and Photonic Sense, a subsidiary of Jenoptik, has fabricated a germanium crystal with a record diameter of 360 mm.
"Growing germanium crystals of this size is visible proof of the performance capability of our systems and the efficiency with which our systems can be operated," remarked Andreas Mühe, CGS' managing director.
Germanium crystals with smaller diameters are already used for applications such as pyrometry, and high-performance solar cells, night vision equipment and lasers.
Firecomms opens offices in the US and JapanFirecomms, an Ireland-based developer of high-speed semiconductor light sources, has opened regional offices in the US and Japan.
The offices in Houston, and Yokohama, Japan, will provide sales and application support to customers in their respective regions.
Veeco appoints Asia Pacific general managerVeeco Instruments has appointed Benjamin Loh Gek Lim as general manager of its Asia Pacific operations, which includes operations in Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, China and India.
Loh leaves Unaxis, where he held the position of senior vice president of Asia and president of Unaxis Shanghai.
Finisar chairman resignsFrank Levinson is to resign from his position as Finisar's chief technical officer and chairman of the board.
He will remain on the board of the company, which manufactures components for fiber optic communication, as a consultant.
The company has selected its CEO Jerry Rawls to take over as chairman of the board, but decided that it will not immediately appoint a new CTO.
Hittite promotes Brian JablonskiFabless manufacturer of RF devices Hittite Microwave has promoted Brian Jablonski from director of operations to vice president of operations.
In his new role Jablonski will be responsible for the company's supply chain management and manufacturing operations.
