LED customer pull nets Korea deal for Aixtron
Theleds, a recent addition to South Korea s LED making ranks, is to scale up GaN device production after ordering two Thomas Swan reactors from Aixtron.
Already a user of Aixtron s Close Coupled Showerhead (CCS) technology, Theleds will supplement its current 30 million chip per month manufacturing capacity with the additional 19x2-inch systems.
“Theleds relies exclusively on the CCS reactor because it has proven to be extremely reliable compared to other reactor technologies,” said Dr. SangKee Shee, the company's executive vice president.
“In order to react to increased customer demand for high brightness LED chips we now have to expand our production capacity,” he said.
Founded in 2005 in Wonsam-Myeon, Yongin-Si, South Korea, Theleds products currently include high-brightness 450-470 nm blue LEDs which it markets for backlighting, camera flash and other illumination.
The company has already grown to a headcount of 50, and has filed 23 patents on its technology. This rapid expansion looks set to continue, after Theleds began construction on a new factory in May this year.
