Avago has a go at transforming lighting with miniature 3-Watt LED

Energy efficient with 140 degree viewing angle and high flux output, LED is suited to safety, emergency and portable lighting

Avago manufactures a broad array of LED products and now introduces its compact high brightness 3W ASMT-Jx32 which delivers a minimum output of 100 lumens (lm) at 350mA driving current.

The InGaN based device available in blue and white (in cool, neutral and warm versions),is also suited to street and residential lighting and is claimed to provide good color uniformity. Each device is priced at $2.50 in 1,000 piece quantities and is available now.

With a footprint of only 5 mm by 4 mm and at 1.85 mm thick, Avago claims tests have demonstrated a lifetime of 50,000 hours. The emitter is designed to handle high thermal and high drive currents of up to 700 mA and features a maximum allowable junction temperature of 135 degrees-C to provide greater lighting design flexibility.

The LED has a high Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) resistance of 16 kV making special ESD protection equipment unnecessary to handle the part during installation. It is compatible with the standard SMT reflow soldering process and is encapsulated in a heat and UV resistant silicone material.

Featuring a low thermal resistance of 9 degree-C per Watt, the electrically neutral heat pad allows arrays to be connected on a common heat sink, thus simplifying thermal design and is also lead-free and RoHS compliant.
