Seed grant awarded for single crystal GaAs PV devices

Stanford University's Precourt Institute for Energy has awarded a seed grant to develop a novel technique for producing high-efficiency photovoltaic devices out of single-crystal GaAs.

Solar cells made of GaAs hold the record for photovoltaic efficiency but are expensive to produce. This project proposes using a novel laser lift-off technique to produce low-cost, single-crystal GaAs films for photovoltaic applications.

The principal investigator of the project is Bruce Clemens, who runs the Clemens Research Group in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University.
