IEEE Conference To Highlight Silicon Photonics, Nanophotonics, And LED Lighting

Program will feature four invited plenary talks, over 500 technical papers, two panel discussions and three symposia

The IEEE Photonics Conference 2015 held from 4 - 8 October in Reston, Virginia, US  will cover the latest research and breakthroughs in lasers, lightwave technologies, optoelectronics, and optical networks.

"This year's Photonics Conference coincides with the International Year of Light [IYL] and the IEEE Photonics Society. As a founding partner of the IYL 2015, our photonics conference provides a key opportunity to highlight the value and impact of photonics during the IYL," said Martin Dawson of the Institute of Photonics, University of Strathclyde (Scotland) and IPC-2015 general chair.

He added: "This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Quantum Electronics Council, which was the predecessor to the IEEE Photonics Society, and the 25th anniversary of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics."

This year's conference program will feature four invited plenary talks on leading-edge photonics areas, more than 500 technical papers, two panel discussions - on women in photonics and the prospects of future federal funding of photonics projects, as well as a series of three special symposia designed to explore emerging photonics topics, a short course and several tutorial sessions. 

There will also be several social events, including an opening reception, a workshop dedicated to advancing professional development in photonics careers, and a special reception for Women in Photonics, as well as a session for students and young professionals.

 - LED Lighting for Energy Savings and Future Prospects of LED Applications by Hiroshi Amano, Nagoya University, Japan and recipient of the 2014 Nobel Prize for Physics

 - Arbitrary Optics - Novel Nanophotonic and Self-Adapting Optoelectronic Systems by David A. B. Miller, Stanford University, USA

 - Tailoring Photons by Nader Engheta, University of Pennsylvania, USA

 - Light's Twist by Miles Padgett, University of Glasgow, UK


 - Frontiers in Integrated Sensing Architectures - will present advances in emerging variations of integrated sensing systems for a broad spectrum of applications, including sensing systems hardware architectures with new modalities of label free sensing, optical diagnostics, chemical specific electronics and flow monitoring.

  - Semiconductor Mode-Locked Lasers and Applications - will explore the applications for monolithic semiconductor mode-locked lasers (sub-picosecond pulse width and high repetition rates), including frequency comb generation for multi-terabit/s data transmission, microwave photonics for defense applications and all-optical signal processing.

 - Space-Division Multiplexing and Multi-Mode Photonics - will examine various aspect of space-division multiplexing transmission technologies, including ultra-dense, 16-mode/19-core fibres; heterogeneous multi-core fibre technology w/100+ spatial channels; and free-space optical transceivers.
