GaN based Amp shrinks Troposcatter systems

Advantech announces second generation 4.4 to 5.0 GHz solid state power amplifier

Advantech Wireless, a satellite broadband communications company, has announced the release of a second generation 500W, 4.4 to 5.0GHz, GaN-based solid state power amplifier (SSPA).

According to the company, this product will extend wireless coverage to locations that were previously inaccessible, and accomplish this with reduced size, weight and power requirements.

The new Super Compact TT Series SapphireBlu SSPA/ SSPB operates over the Low C-band TROPO frequency of 4.4 to 5.0GHz. Troposcatter (also known as tropospheric scatter) is a method of communicating with microwave signals reflecting from the atmosphere for robust communications links over very long distances.

"Tropospheric communication links are becoming a viable solution where there is now no satellite coverage or where satellite bandwidth cost is prohibitive," said Advantech Wireless VP of Business Development Cristi Damian.  "These systems allow real time communication in these remote locations and are difficult to locate or jam."

Applications for the new system include oil or mining sites, and military operations for strategic communications links, often in places where there is little or no infrastructure, and there is need for mobile, secure, high bandwidth.
