Ams Osram files patent case against Spider Farmer
Ams Osram, a maker of LEDs and sensors, has filed a patent infringement complaint in the United States against Spider Farmer, a manufacturer of indoor farming luminaires, and has also taken further action based on European and German patents. The complaint alleges the unauthorised use of proprietary Ams Osram LED technology in certain horticultural lighting systems.
The case centres on patents relating to Ams Osram’s hyper-red (660 nm) LED architecture – a critical component of lighting solutions for controlled environment agriculture. Unlike a prior case it filed in the spring of this year, the company says this complaint involves a different luminaire maker selling a different luminaire with a different LED model, underscoring the presence of multiple suppliers around the world selling products that do not meet essential IP compliance standards.
“This is not just about enforcing patents – it’s about protecting the integrity of our innovation ecosystem,” said Aldo Kamper, CEO of Ams Osram. “We have made significant investments to develop technologies that deliver measurable benefits in agricultural efficiency. It is our responsibility to defend these innovations and ensure fair competition.”
Ams Osram says its hyper-red technology delivers industry-leading photon efficacy and spectral precision tailored to plant growth applications. “Technology leadership must be matched by IP integrity,” Kamper said. “We will remain vigilant and take decisive action whenever our intellectual property is compromised – not only for our own sake, but for the benefit of a transparent and trustworthy industry landscape.”
